Our story didn’t begin with size—it began with bold vision. From a modest operation to a leading independent asphalt provider across North America, Bitumar’s journey has been one of innovation, leadership, and enduring partnerships.

1977
Bitumar is born

Founded in 1977 by Marcel Thériault, Bitumar emerged from modest beginnings to command a dominant position in the liquid asphalt industry.

Guided by Marcel’s entrepreneurial genius and forward-thinking spirit, the company built its foundation on bold, strategic decisions and enduring relationships.

A Visionary Beginning

Marcel Thériault was not only an entrepreneur but also a visionary. With years of hands-on experience in the asphalt industry, he had already developed deep expertise in building and managing complex asphalt operations. Marcel saw potential where others saw limitations. When the time came to strike out on his own, he founded Bitumar—a bold move that would reshape the industry. One of his first breakthroughs came in 1981, when he acquired a specialized bitumen segmentation machine from Italy. This innovation allowed Bitumar to produce 50-pound blocks known as Bur-Paks, transforming how asphalt was distributed across Canada.

1980s
Growth and Expansion
Throughout the 1980s, Bitumar’s operations expanded significantly. In 1987, Marcel acquired the GULF Canada plant, located in the Montreal-Est industrial park, which then became the Broadway plant — today known as the Jean-Lussier plant. This acquisition allowed the company to increase its production capacity and solidify its presence in the paving and roofing asphalt markets.

Marcel’s sons, Daniel and Marc Thériault, grew up working in the family business. Both brothers officially joined Bitumar full-time in the 1980s and 1990s, helping the company scale new heights. Daniel and Marc credit their father’s entrepreneurial drive and ability to foster relationships as key to Bitumar’s success. They also played crucial roles in the company’s growth in the U.S. market, particularly with their expansion into Baltimore in 1999. This entry into the U.S. paved the way for further developments across North America.

2000s
Leadership in Innovation and Excellence

In 2000, Jean Lussier took over as president of Bitumar, bringing decades of experience from the oil industry. Under his leadership, Bitumar underwent significant infrastructure improvements, including the renovation of its headquarters in Montreal and the construction of new facilities, such as the plant on Sainte-Catherine Street, inaugurated in 2009 as the "Marcel-Thériault Complex".

2023
Louis Gabanna Joins Bitumar

In 2023, a new chapter began with the appointment of Louis Gabanna as president. With a formidable track record with major players in the industry, Louis brings fresh vision and unparalleled expertise to Bitumar. His leadership combines an innovative perspective with a deep respect for the company’s legacy, positioning Bitumar for continued success as it navigates new opportunities in both Canadian and U.S. markets.

Today
A Family-Driven Future Rooted in Strong Relationships

Today, Bitumar remains a family-driven business, with Daniel and Marc Thériault deeply involved in its day-to-day operations. They proudly welcome the third generation into the fold, with Genevieve and Kailey Thériault actively contributing to the company’s future.

Bitumar’s continued success is built on the strong relationships it has cultivated over the years—with clients, suppliers, and employees. These connections, grounded in trust and collaboration, have been key to Bitumar's growth.

As a nimble and independent asphalt provider, Bitumar remains poised to seize opportunities in an ever-evolving industry. The family culture at Bitumar is one of its greatest strengths. Many employees have been with the company for decades, fostering a deep sense of belonging and loyalty. This commitment is reflected in the company's enduring partnerships with clients and suppliers, where mutual respect and shared goals continue to drive long-term success.

The Future
Looking Forward

As Bitumar continues to expand across the U.S. Northeast and beyond, its focus remains on innovation, operational excellence, and maintaining the core values instilled by its founder, Marcel Thériault. With a strong legacy behind it and a dynamic leadership team guiding it forward, Bitumar is poised for continued success and growth in the decades to come.
