About Bitumar

Company History

Vision, drive and innovation. It is under the leadership of these three principles that Bitumar, the once small asphalt emulsion provider has become a leader in the industry.

The story of Québec entrepreneurship begins in 1977 when Mr. Marcel Theriault rents space at 11,650 Metropolitan Boulevard East, a then road-stop for truckers. The 1980s represent an important period for the company. In 1981, during a trip to Italy, Mr. Marcel Theriault made the purchase Bitumen segmentation machine hot molds allowing to sell bitumen in blocks of 50 pounds, the famous Bur-Paks.

In 1987, Marcel Thériault acquired the GULF Canada factory in the industrial park in Montreal East. Soon after the acquisition, the plant was re-named Broadway. This plant allows Bitumar to significantly increase its production capacity and consolidate its activities in the sale of paving and roofing asphalt.

The year 2000 marks the arrival of Jean Lussier to the presidency of the company. With more than 25 years’ experience in the oil industry, Mr. Lussier brings with him a wealth of knowledge. That same year, Bitumar began renovating its headquarters, where it all began twenty-three years earlier. A third addition is made to the building to accommodate the management team.

Marc and Daniel, Marcel’s two sons, took over the company in a time of great expansion. In 2004, a fourth production center is built in Hamilton, Ontario, increasing the number of employees to over 100 individuals. It was in 2008 that Bitumar acquired a piece of land on Sainte-Catherine Street. In addition to building new headquarters, Bitumar built a new plant on the same site in order to install all the Bur-pak manufacturing equipment. It was in 2009 that the new site named Marcel-Theriault was inaugurated.

In recent years, Bitumar has been developing and consolidating its markets and is increasingly establishing itself as the leader in bitumen distribution in the US Northeast. Bitumar recently entered into significant agreements to expand the storage of their product. These agreements have enabled Bitumar occupy terminals in Rhode Island, Maine, Connecticut, Wilmington and Florida.

In early 2016, a merger between Canadian Asphalt Industries Inc. and Bitumar Hamilton took place. Since then, the Hamilton subsidiary is now named Canadian Asphalt Industries.

The Year 2016 also marked the acquisition of ARTC, now Bitumar (Georgia), Inc.

It is thanks to these many projects that today there are over 220 employees working across the Bitumar network.
